Thyme...

(Kim's 1412 texture, multiply, 100% opacity)

It was a nice little break from doing our taxes, my least favorite thing to have to be doing,
to put together this simple still life and to spend a few moments photographing it.
I think Kim is right.
When we pause, even for a few minutes, to be still enough to enjoy a little touch of beauty
and to capture it in a photograph, it calms and refreshes the soul.

This little thyme plant normally resides on my kitchen windowsill.
It thrives there in its sunny spot.

(Kim's avery texture, lighten, 20% opacity)

For this still life, I set a few of my favorite cookbooks on top of an old crate
and used the thyme plant as a living bookend.
Simply lovely.
Now, if I just didn't have to finish those darn taxes!

  1. I love seeing homes with wonderful light...and am admittedly envious of that light. You've set up a beautiful scene with the thyme.

    1. I shot this right in front of the dining room window on a rather gray day. I used my 50mm lens pretty wide open.

    1. Thank you, Jill! It was a rather gray day, but right in front of my dining room window the light, combined with using my 50mm lens fairly wide open, made a nice result.

  5. 'When we pause, even for a few minutes, to be still enough ...it calms and refreshes the soul." HowEVER you fill in the ellipses, there is refreshment in the "pause" and "stilling". You are SO talented in arranging/creating still lifes. I've never met you in person, but I suspect they reflect your soft, gentle nature...♥

  8. Not only is your photography beautiful, being reminded that it is called "still life" speaks to me today. I think I need to take a deliberate break and capture the art of still life.

  13. So lovely and sunny! I agree that taxes are so unpleasant -- it's one of the few times I turn to diet soda. Hope you got them done on time!

  14. Beautifully done. Your thyme plant is so lovely and airy and the pot it is in is beautiful. Love the background through the window . . . it gives a wonderful color behind your plant. I actually had the fun and pleasure of seeing a live cooking demonstration by Julia Child a few years ago. It was a blast . . . she was just like she was on her TV show.

  15. Beautiful photos! And a nice break from taxes. I loved the thought that a photography break brings a calm refreshing to the soul. So true - I need more of that. It's always a great change of pace.
