Baseball Beans...

Baseball beans are a family favorite.
The recipe started with my sister-in-law who got the recipe from a school cookbook
and then made some changes of her own.
Since then, I have made a few slight changes as well.
{My sister-in-law, is fairly new to the blogosphere,
so why not pop in and give her a welcome!
Her blog is My Heart 4 Home.}

Baseball beans are something like a baked bean and something like an all in one hearty casserole.
We love them for picnics, barbecues and potlucks...actually we love them any time!
(I've only met one person who doesn't like them and she doesn't like beans in any way shape or form.)

Here's the recipe:

(the source of the name is a mystery)

1 lb. hamburger
1 lb. bacon (I used a 12 oz. pkg. instead.)
and 2 medium onions, chopped (I used one large onion)
Drain off fat.

In crock pot or dutch oven add:
2 - 15 oz. cans pork and beans
2 - 15 oz. cans kidney beans (drain off most of the liquid)
2 - 15 oz. cans butter beans (or another bean of choice-drain off most of the liquid)
1 cup brown sugar
1/2 cup white sugar (I omit this)
1/2 cup ketchup
1/3 cup molasses
1 teaspoon dry mustard (I use 1 1/2 teaspoon)
2 teaspoons worcestershire sauce
Add hamburger, bacon and onion to bean mixture and stir everything together.

Cook in crockpot on high for 4 hours,
or in dutch oven with lid on bake at 350 for an hour.

  1. Thanks for the link! This recipe is the most requested dish I have ever brought to a potluck!

  2. Elizabeth, I'm so glad I popped over to your blog this morning. This recipe looks delicious. We are planning fish for dinner tonight, which my son does not really care for. I may surprise him and make this instead. Looks to be healthy, tasty, and not too complicated. Thank You! I'm headed to your sister-in-law's blog next.

  3. They look delicious to me. I'm a bean lover from way back. I like nearly any recipe or combination you can offer me. Interesting that you don't know why they are called Baseball Beans. I just knew there was a story out there somewhere.

    1. I always thought it was my sister-in-law's name and she brought them to her three son's many baseball games, but she said that was the name in the school cookbook with no explanation of why.

  4. Oh yum. I love all kinds of beans! Thanks for the recipe!

  5. Looks fabulous, and perfect for the crockpot when we're at baseball games! Thanks for sharing at Fridays Unfolded!

  6. Thanks for the recipe Elizabeth. I enjoy trying different types of recipes from the US and I've tried a couple from your blog :)

  7. Sounds delicious! I'll have to try it sometime!
