Why I “need” steel cut oats and Pottery Barn napkins…

002

My Hubs can see right through me.

Dog gone it.

When I had my last physical my cholesterol was up.

I exercise regularly and watch my fat intake pretty carefully.

Unfortunately, high cholesterol is in my genetics.

Dog gone it again.

The good news is that my good cholesterol was high too,

so my doctor wasn’t too panicked.

She said to try natural ways to reduce it…oatmeal, omega 3, etc.

So when I saw these steel cut oats at the store I bought them.

For my health you know.

Steel cut oats are less processed than regular oatmeal,

therefore they contain more fiber and have more cholesterol lowering power.

But the Hubs said, “You just bought them because you like the tin they’re in.”

Busted.

{I thought once we ate them, the tin would be so cute with flowers in it.}

But we actually like the steel cut oats.

So, when the tin was empty, I found a bag of organic steel cut oats at Costco and filled the tin back up.

These oats take 30 minutes to cook.

For convenience sake you can bring them to a boil the night before,

cook them for one minute, turn off the heat and put a lid on them.

In the morning all you have to do is stir them up and reheat them.

I like mine topped with fat free milk, dried cherries and some walnuts.

On another note, notice the lovely cloth napkins in my photos.

Pottery Barn clearance!

Marked down twice!

We use cloth napkins a lot.

And aren’t cloth napkins better for the environment than using all that paper?

So I needed these.

Just like the oats.

Still following,

Elizabeth

  1. You made me laugh. My first thought when I saw your photo was "she bought those for the tin!"
Hopefully they'll do the trick for your cholesterol too. And yes, the cloth napkins are WONDERFUL.

  3. I've been meaning to try the steel-cut oats but haven't done it yet--

MckMama over at www.mycharmingkids.net prepares them overnight in a crockpot for her family of seven--

But your idea sounds easier especially just for two--I must try them.

Keep up the good work looking after the cholesterol--

Praying that the bad number is lower next time.

    Love,
    D.

  5. Busted! I love steel cut oats, but mine don't come in a sweet tin like that. I'm going to have to shop elsewhere.

  6. Nodding about the cloth napkins. That's one of my oddball quirks. I hardly ever use a napkin that isn't cloth/cotton. I don't know why, but it just makes things taste better when they look pretty.

I haven't tried steel cut oats. I'm not the most patient gal around so I would have to get used to a thirty minute oatmeal. BUT it looks like it is well worth the wait.

  7. Oh,thank you for an early morning laugh. It is such a good way to start the day. I checked out the book "One thousand gifts" from the library, then knew that I needed to purchase it. Well, I am into my second reading and it is every bit as great as you said it was. Life changing it is. I am receiving so much from your blog, I have to write that gift down in my little book. Thanks

  8. Love the tin and napkins, too! Try putting a TBS or so of flax in your oatmeal; it's good Omega-3 and helps reduce cholesterol among other great benefits! Plus they taste pretty good in oatmeal!

  12. Oh, I 'need' steel cut oats in a tin, too. Keep your hubs guessing! Maybe he will change his thought if you keep filling the tin with oats!
