Rocking chair makeover…

I have had this antique craftsman style rocker for quite a few years.

I’ve wanted to paint it and reupholster the seat for a long time,

(any antique dealers out there shuttering?),

and finally just did it!

First I “roughed up” the old finish with sandpaper, then wiped it down really well. Then, while I did the painting a dear friend from church came and tore the old cushion apart and systematically figured out how to repair and reupholster it.  Neither of us have ever recovered something before, but she was definitely the right person for the job. She was patient, methodical and precise.  I would have been pulling my hair out!

I found the brand new upholstery fabric at Goodwill for only 2.99,

and I liked it better than anything I’d seen at the fabric store!

It looks a bit like ticking.

After three coats of flat white paint, I lightly distressed the chair, then gave it a coat of furniture wax.

When that was dry I buffed it, and put the newly covered cushion in place.

It sits in the corner of the guest bedroom, or the grandkid’s room as it's more commonly called,

(and more commonly used for).

I’m lovin’  it!

  2. I love your 'new' chair! I have an old rocker with a seat exactly like yours. It belonged to my sweetheart's grandmother - she rocked her babies and her grandbabies (my sweetheart, too!) in it and I rocked my babies in it. It needs to be glued in places and the seat needs to be reworked. I've been thinking of painting it for my guestroom. You've inspired me!

  7. Believe it or not, I have almost the exact chair, if not the exact chair. It belonged to The Man's grandmother. Since it's kinda/sorta a family heirloom, I've left it in its original condition, except I took the cushion out and my mother made a wonderful replacement, complete with a padding for the back area. I rocked my sweet great-niece to sleep in it just the other night. :) I love old things. You did a great job on the rocker.

  8. We have a family piece that is almost the twin to that! It was my grandmother's chair, and my older sister has it. I love it.

You did a beautiful job in changing it out more to your taste while keeping the primitive feel of it. I love the way you did the arms.

It's a beautiful chair. I shall use self control not to covet.

  9. What a great transformation!! I love painted and "aged" furniture...not sure why so many people shutter at the thought of painting wood! Anyway...great job, love the fabric and the distressing!!
