Ironstone...

While I was spring cleaning I took all of my ironstone off the shelves and gave each piece a hot soapy bath.
I do believe I'd forgotten how lovely it is in all of its worn and crazed beauty.

The majority of my pieces were thrift store finds, including all of these pieces of Meakin ironstone.

Some ironstone is detailed, like the Meakin pieces above,
and some are plain like the one below, which is also made by Meakin.

Here's a piece with scalloped edges.

These two bowls are favorites because of the memory of how I found them.
Shortly after Mama passed away, I noticed an estate sale sign
in the same senior adult housing development she used to live in.
As I asked the people running the sale if their loved one had passed away as well,
I got a bit emotional.
I pointed out Mama's home to them and told them that she had passed away a few months previously.
I was a bit embarrassed at my emotions, but they were so kind in response.
These ironstone bowls were purchased from them.

I love the edging on these pieces.

This serving bowl is probably the oldest piece that I have.

This bowl is my most recent find, one of the few that I actually purchased at an antique store.
It's also one of the largest bowls I have.

These little handleless cups and saucers are a favorite.
I found a set of four at a thrift store.

Here you can see an ironstone platter on display on the shelves in my dining room.

And here's another large ironstone bowl.

I love it when I open my eyes and see old things that I already have with new appreciation.

still following,

  1. I stand in complete agreement about looking at your same old stuff with new appreciate. I also stand in agreement about ironstone. I'm fond of all of it, and my favorite pieces have just a bit of detail to them, not to much... not too little. I love the story of your favorite pieces.

    1. Sometimes I get tempted to buy something new, when what I really need to do is to do something new with what I already have!

  2. I know exactly what you mean about appreciating the beauty of what you have. Just yesterday in my post I spoke about that as well, because it may sound like I go on and on about how beautiful some of my pieces are, but it's not about me or my owning them--it's appreciating their beauty, period. Your collection is absolutely great. I've often wondered what exactly ironstone is (versus white dishes) but I think you answered my question by showing that your pieces say "ironstone"!! Thanks for sharing...they're lovely.

    1. Lots of times ironstone is marked, but sometimes it isn't. You eventually get familiar with the look and feel.

  7. Your ironstone pieces are beautiful. I have a few pieces but I'm always looking for more. It's getting harder to find because so many of us have discovered its beauty! Love the way you've displayed your pieces. See you soon, dear friend. Whatever will we do if we both find ironstone when we're antiquing and thrifting together?

  8. I love ironstone too! I'm always on the hunt. ;) It is such a treat to go to an estate sale or store and score a piece at a good price. :) I love to look them up and try to date them by their markings.

  10. Ironstone to me is like art - & I never tire of looking at it. I would get rid of paintings I have before my ironstone pieces. Thanks

    1. I used to have a real life friend named Mary Scott. She's in heaven now, but thanks for your kind comment and the fun memories that came flooding back when I read your name. I agree, ironstone, like so many other "homey" items, is beautiful art.
