Jesse's Branch...

The scriptures prophesy of the coming Messiah in Isaiah 11,
saying that He will be a branch springing up from the root of Jesse, the father of King David.
Many people celebrating Advent have a Jesse tree,
a tree full of symbols telling of the Messiah's coming.
In our house, we reinvented this tradition with a simple branch and twenty five tags, each tag with a different title for the Messiah listed, with the corresponding verse written on the back.
This year, for the first time, my two oldest grandchildren are here for the whole holiday season,
so each day they get to be the ones to add one tag until Christmas day.

Here are the names of Jesus we chose with the scripture where the name is found.

Jesus -Matthew 1:21
Savior-1 John 4:14
Son of God- Luke 1:32-35
Son of Man-Matthew 18:11
Redeemer-Job 19:25
King of Kings -1 Timothy 6:14-15
Lord of Lords-1 Timothy 6:14-15
Bread of Heaven-John 6:51
I Am-Exodus 3:14
Alpha and Omega-Revelation 1:8
The Word- John 1:1
The Way, The Truth, The Life- John 14:6
Lamb of God- John 1:29
The Door- John 10:7-10
Good Shepherd-John 10:11
The Deliverer-Romans 11:26
Friend-John 15:15
My Beloved-Song of Solomon 7:10
Bridegroom-Isaiah 62:5
Faithful Witness- Revelation 1:5-6
My Righteousness-1 Corinthians 1:30
Wisdom of God-1 Corinthians 1:30
Lion of Judah- Revelation 5:5

I'm so grateful for the chance to share this tradition with my grandchildren!

  1. What a neat tradition! We've never done a Jesse Tree but I think that is something I'm definitely going to put on the list next year. I think I like that better than the Christmas Tree! Thanks for sharing yours. :)

  2. I have a grouping of 3 small pencil trees and I made 50 little "blackboards" from cardstock and wrote 50 different names and titles of Jesus on them with a white colored pencil, which looks like chalk. I think I will go back and write the scripture reference on the backs of them now. Love your Jesse tree. I think I will make a Jesse Tree next year and use it during Advent to count off the days till Christmas with the grandchildren. Thanks for the inspiration! Your tree is beautiful!

  8. I love the Jesse Tree idea! Our church is doing a virtual Jesse Tree online with a daily meditative devotion reflecting on the lineage and old testament prophesies leading to Christ's birth. You've inspired me to create a tree for my home to further focus on this emphasis this year!
Thank you, Elizabeth and many blessings to you this holiday season! :)
