Memories…

Most of you know that my mama went to heaven two weeks ago.

I am comforted by the truth that she is enjoying eternal life with Jesus

and that I will see her again.

Having some of her things here in my home is a comfort as well.

The little suitcase that she always brought with her when she came to stay at our house

to babysit our girls while the Hubs and I were out of town for this or that…

The dresser scarf she embroidered

that always sat on top of her “bureau”…

that’s what she called it, not dresser.

(By the way, did any of you have a mama who called the couch a “davenport” or “daveno” like my mama did?)

These vintage things of Mama’s bring a smile to my face and I hope they do to yours as well.

HAPPY FRIDAY EVERYONE!

  1. Those are nice things to have that were your moms along with the memory. The first year was always roughest for me. First birthdays, Christmas etc. without them here to enjoy or celebrate with us. It will get easier but you will never have them out of your mind or heart. There will always be some little thing to bring a beautiful memory to mind, something as simple as a smell or the feel of something that reminds of them. I cherish my memories and even though I miss them dearly I have learned to live without them physically being here to touch or talk to.

  2. Such precious things that will bring you such happy memories. Remember the little stories and funny things she said and did often - they are a good part of the process. My grandma and my dear, little mother called it a davenport or daveno!

  3. You make me think of my grandmother and her little suitcase. Just like your mama's except it is green. (My mama has it.) I hold dear all the little things made for me by her. They are a symbol of the love she gave so freely. So glad you have those things to bring comfort.

  4. So sorry that you had to say "goodbye - for now".

We didn't have anyone that said "davenport", but Grandma called hers "the chesterfield".

    Hugs to you

  5. My family still uses 'davenport' as often as 'couch' or 'sofa.' ;-) My 90-year-old mother has a suitcase as old as some of her children; that's what she packs when she goes overnight.

  7. I also have some things of my mother's that I cherish. Unfortunately her memory is not good enough to tell me where a lot of them came from. (Some were her mother's and some her grandmother's.) It would be nice to know, but I waited too long. That does make me sad.

Do you remember things like a smell or something else that reminds you of her? The smell of tomato vines makes me think of my mom because she used to make me go to a friend's garden and pick different veggies for hours in the hot sun. Hated it then. Brings a smile to my face now. Longhorn cheese (w/red wax) was always in our fridge. I bought some over Christmas break just because. I have never bought it myself as an adult.

    Memories are a blessing.

Oh, and my family always called the couch/sofa a divan.

  9. Bureau I've heard frequently, but never davenport.
It took me many months to put out several items from my parents' home after Daddy died and Mama moved, but now I am so glad to have those special things!

  10. I am so sorry about the loss of your mother but so glad you have these things to give you some comfort right now. But more than that, I'm glad you have the comfort of knowing where she will spend eternity and that you will be with her again someday. That is the best comfort of all! Thank you so much for sharing this with us at Inspiration Friday this week!
    Blessings,
    Vanessa

  11. Good morning dear friend,
Just had you on my mind this morning and wanted to hop over and tell you I love you and I am praying for you.

What a treat to get to see the suitcase again. I love it and the embroidered piece your mom did.

I still curl up on the "davenport" for a sunday afternoon nap under the afghan my mom made and feel all cuddly with her love surrounding me.

We are so blessed to have some wonderful memories of our moms.

    Loving you,
    Dianne

  12. These are lovely and just look like a mom to me.

My grandmother called her sofa a Davenport. It was a sleeper sofa, and we had never seen one of them before. For years, my brother, sisters, and I thought that a Davenport was a name for one that opened to a bed.

  13. Yup. My mom called it davenport, too. She was from the Midwest. I wonder if it is a regional thing?

i'm sorry to hear about your mama. when i lost my father four and a half years ago, one of the only comforts i found was knowing without a doubt that i would one day see him again in heaven.
