Something beautiful…

001pk

I believe our desire to create beauty around us

is evidence that we were created by Someone Beautiful.

002pk

Someone Who hovered over chaos and spoke the beauty of creation into being.

003pk

Someone who made a garden for man’s first dwelling place.

004pk

Someone Who’s blueprints for the tabernacle of Moses, the temple of Solomon,

included beautiful details beyond imagination.

005pk

Someone who could have created a  simply functional creation,

but Who made it beautiful for His, and for our, pleasure.

006pk

Yes, we could exist in a simply functional environment,

but

I feel His smile when I notice, enjoy and  create beauty around me.

The week in between…

Youngest daughter flew back to her little basement apartment home in Kansas City, Missouri.  The house is quiet with just the Hubs and I here.  It’s foggy gray outside, and I hear the rain on the roof over my head.  The Christmas decorations are all put back into their plastic bins in the garage.  The tree, quite dried out and missing many of its needles, is out on the deck, waiting for the Boy Scouts to come and dispose of it for a small fund-raising fee.  The walls of the house seem a bit bare and stark and this wee little house seems a bit bigger with all of the holiday hooplah stashed away for another year.  Once Christmas evening rolls around I am usually already looking forward to decluttering and getting my heart and home ready for the New Year.  In my heart, in my home, on my calendar and journal pages, fresh, clean, empty space, waiting, waiting, waiting, for the future and hope God has promised me.

I count my years by Christmases come and gone, more than by my birthdays.  I remember last Christmas, and the many, many changes and unknowns we were facing.  I look back on this year so filled with the faithfulness of God and I am  so very grateful.  He has been, always will be, the Rock beneath my feet that cannot be shaken.

Before we completely close the book on 2010 and open the fresh clean pages of 2011, I thought I would share some photos of this year’s Christmas dinner table.  It was simple, but I think it was simply beautiful.

Four days and counting…

002

We drove baby granddaughter by some houses in our neighborhood that go all out with the Christmas lights.  I love that when I snapped this shot I happened to catch a little of the bluehour sky and also how the lights are reflected in the mud puddle.

Today I head to the mall to finish up buying the last two gifts on my list.  Tonight we have our annual Christmas gathering with the Hub’s side of the family.  I have the best sister-in-law in the world…with my mama sick she did my Christmas baking for me and baked a Rubbermaid tote full of Christmas goodies for our family!  She is one of the most giving people I know.

Youngest daughter is home from Missouri. Yay!  I miss my South Carolina daughter, son-in-law and grandbabies so much it hurts.  This is our very first Christmas without them here.

What are you doing today with only four days left ‘til Christmas?

I would love for you to comment and tell me!

Thankful…

120

She had no driver’s license, no job,  and had just gotten  out of the mental hospital when Daddy left her, left us.  She had gone to the hospital because she was depressed and didn’t want to live anymore.  That scared her for us kids.

That was over forty years ago.  From the time Daddy sat us kids down and told us he was leaving, God stepped up to the plate for us kids and for our mama. She learned to drive, got a good job, and started taking us to a church that became our support system…that God used to save us kids from being statistics of a broken home, and instead, to become testimonies of His faithfulness.

When Mama, now 85 years old, fell and broke her hip on Sunday I was, of course, very upset and worried.  I was also conflicted because I knew Mama needed me, but I also knew youngest daughter was planning on the Hubs and I flying to Missouri to spend Thanksgiving with her,  and that she needed us.  She has been in a difficult season, and I knew she especially needed me, her mama.  Have you every felt torn between two people you love…both needing you, but one a half country away from the other?

Sunday afternoon, sitting in the hospital with my mama, looking so little, helpless, frail, I was feeling all sorts of emotions.  Over the years, however, I’ve learned to wade through the confusion of emotions, the swirling of confusing thoughts, and to discern what is going on in my spirit.  In my spirit, the dwelling place of God’s Spirit, I knew that He was watching faithfully over my Mama, just as He has for all of these years.  In my spirit there was Peace.  I knew that as I took each moment as they came, He would show me what to do.  In my spirit there was Strength.  I knew He would enable me to face whatever was to come.

Monday evening they wheeled Mama down to pre-op.  My two sisters were now with me from out of town.  The three of us joined hands and prayed for Mama.  To our delight, the nurses in pre-op bowed their heads and said “Amen” when we did.  As we waited for the surgeon to arrive, I noticed that the nurse was changing the cd in the pre-op room.  Soon the sound of instrumental hymns filled the room.  When the surgeon arrived, my oldest sister boldly stated that we were praying for him as he did the surgery.  He asked us, “Would you like to pray now?”, and led us in a prayer that I knew that only one who truly knows and truly believes could pray.

Mama’s surgery went flawlessly.   She had no distress during the operation.  She had no unusual bleeding in spite of being on blood thinners until she fell on Sunday.  On Tuesday, they already had Mama sitting up and doing physical therapy.

The Hubs and I are now in Missouri with youngest daughter.  My wonderful sisters are by Mama’s side.  Thank you to all of you dear friends, who have prayed and sent me words of love and concern.  As usual, I am overwhelmed at how good God is.

Love to you all,

Elizabeth

Curiosity killed the cat…or turned it into a thief.

I’ve always loved the old shed.  It’s one of my favorite things that I pass on my walking route.  I found out it is on the edge of what is now city property. I am pretty sure it is eventually destined for the bulldozer.  In the past, I’ve been too chicken to go inside due to my fear of rodents. But this time, my curiosity was stronger than my fear.

I poked my camera through the crack in the door.

Then I waded through thorny blackberry bushes and went around back and found that part of the back wall is missing…

I beg you, do not call Crimestoppers  on me………

You thought I came home with that wonderful chippy old door, with its old rusty hardware, didn’t you?  I wish.

There was also the most wonderful wagon wheel inside with a red hub.  RED!  Sigh…

No, evidently I am more into petty crime.

I came home with this old wooden crate, scrubbed it all up, and it now sits happily  next to the couch and the old blue dresser…

I must  admit, my tender conscience is bothering me just a wee bit.

(Dear City of Portland,

I stole an old wooden crate from your abandoned shed.

If you want it back, leave a blog comment, and I will return it.)

Home again, home again, jiggity jig…

We got home late last night after 11 days of vacation in the sunny and hot, hot, hot Coachella Valley of California.  Instead of waking up to blue skies and early morning temps in the nineties, I woke up to cool air, overcast skies, and the familiar sounds of the birds that live around my house. I will miss the blue skies and heat, but there’s still no place like home.

In my neighborhood…

The Portland metro region has a population of over two million.
Yet, here in Portland city limits, here in my neighborhood, this…

A red barn.

Margins…

In honor of Father’s Day, I want to blog beautifully about the miracle of God’s grace in my relationship with my daddy…

Or how God became my father in such a real way after Daddy left us…

Or about my husband, and what a good daddy and papa he is…

but for four weeks now…

four weeks of packing up my house for repainting and reflooring…

and then in the midst of that chaos…

packing up my Mama’s house to move her to assisted living…

then trying to get her settled…

while in the meanwhile, things at my house are still unsettled…

for four weeks there’s been no margins…

no clean, empty, space…

to meditate…

think…

contemplate…

walk…

be still…

rest…

So, those beautiful thoughts will have to wait and percolate for another time…

For now I say, Happy Father’s Day to…

My Father in Heaven

My Daddy now in heaven with Him

My wonderful hubby.

God of the details…

DSC_0040

Nothing is so small that it escapes His notice.

Nothing too insignificant for Him to make beautiful.

He pays attention to the details.
